The John Lennon Wall in Prague was created as a spontaneous tribute to John Lennon after his murder on 8 December 1980. An unknown artist painted a graffiti portrait of Lennon, inspiring others to cover the wall with his song lyrics, peace messages and calls for freedom. Under communism, Western music, including Lennon's songs, was banned. The authorities repeatedly painted over the wall. However, the Czech youth continuously restored it, and the Lennon Wall became a peaceful form of protest against the regime. Today, the wall is a global symbol of freedom of expression and peace.
