Lennon’s Legacy: How a Wall Became a Voice for Freedom in Prague

After the tragic death of John Lennon on 8 December 1980, a symbolic memorial was created in Prague in his honour. The Maltese Garden wall became a place where people silently protested against communism and wrote various texts about freedom and peace.

It was a colourful tribute to the life and work of John Lennon. The significance of the Lennon Wall deepened in the 1980s when it became an essential point of anti-regime demonstrations in Prague. These protests, which began as memorial rallies after Lennon's death, later grew into a larger movement demanding the withdrawal of Soviet troops, the release of political prisoners and the dismantling of nuclear weapons in Czechoslovakia.

Protest actions at Lennon's Wall during the last years of the communist regime contributed greatly to its overthrow after the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
